<div>
Yes or No? But, before even attempting to answer this question, you might want to explore what kind of thinking skills a 21st Century thinker should acquire to be successful in the world beyond family life and education. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<h2>
<b>TOP 10 SKILLS</b></h2>
<div>
According to <a href="http://reports.weforum.org/future-of-jobs-2016/?lipi=urn%3Ali%3Apage%3Ad_flagship3_pulse_read%3BL2yAfte1S0iy0idmL31%2Bww%3D%3D" target="_blank">The Future of Jobs Report</a> (World Economic Forum) six out of the top 10 skills predicted in 2020 to be in demand by the corporate world, are thinking-intensive skills (Interestingly, all 10 are basically soft skills). As a framework to decide whether we are 21st Century thinkers, let’s use these six identified skills (refer to the drawing above). </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So, are you good at <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">COMPLEX PROBLEM SOLVING</span></b>? What about <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">CRITICAL THINKING</span></b>? What is critical thinking anyway? Ironically, I have personally yet to find a global unified accepted definition on what critical thinking really is? If you ask me, critical thinking is just an umbrella term for many types of thinking (combined), including analyzing, decision making, problem solving, reasoning and evaluation. And if you break critical thinking down like this, you might realize for example that you are awesome at analyzing things, but crap at decision making. If so, are you crap or awesome at critical thinking? </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I was assigned to teach critical thinking in 2007 at a University (UNITAR) in Malaysia, and just found it extremely weird to facilitate critical thinking separately from creative thinking, and as a result I actually redesigned the whole course. If you want to read about that adventure, <a href="http://zaidlearn.blogspot.my/2008/03/coaching-critical-thinking-to-think.html?lipi=urn%3Ali%3Apage%3Ad_flagship3_pulse_read%3BL2yAfte1S0iy0idmL31%2Bww%3D%3D" target="_blank">CLICK HERE</a> (4859 words).</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
What about <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">CREATIVITY</span></b>? Are you a creative person? Are you open and good at exploring new ideas, problem solving and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Problem_finding?lipi=urn%3Ali%3Apage%3Ad_flagship3_pulse_read%3BL2yAfte1S0iy0idmL31%2Bww%3D%3D" target="_blank">problem finding</a>? Are you good at working in teams (or groups) to brainstorm and innovate new solutions? </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
What about <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE</span></b>? While it is easy to find mistakes in others, how good are we in spotting our own emotional (feelings) and behavioral weaknesses when interacting with people? And once recognizing them, what do we to improve ourselves? How do we manage and/or adjust our emotions to adapt to different environments, or achieve our goals (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emotional_intelligence?lipi=urn%3Ali%3Apage%3Ad_flagship3_pulse_read%3BL2yAfte1S0iy0idmL31%2Bww%3D%3D" target="_blank">Source</a>)?</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
What about making<b><span style="color: #cc0000;"> JUDGMENTS </span></b>and <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">DECISION MAKING</span></b>? Do we make good decisions when challenged to do so? Do we involve others in the decision making process? If you are a CEO for a big company, and have knowingly made a bad decision, would you overturn it? What if you’re bad decision was discovered and corrected by your new employee who you really don’t like? What would you do?</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Do you have <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">COGNITIVE FLEXIBILITY</span></b>? Do you have the mental ability to switch between thinking about two different concepts, and to think about multiple concepts simultaneously, such as the perspectives of opposing viewpoints (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_flexibility?lipi=urn%3Ali%3Apage%3Ad_flagship3_pulse_read%3BL2yAfte1S0iy0idmL31%2Bww%3D%3D" target="_blank">Source</a>). </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So, do you have any, some or all of these six thinking-intensive skills? To what degree? </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<h2>
<b>THINKING TOOLS</b></h2>
<div>
More importantly, what <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">THINKING TOOLS</span></b> (Socratic method, six thinking hats, design thinking, etc.) have you used, or are using today to improve your thinking individually, and in groups? Are the thinking tools utilized led to better ideas, processes, products, services and solutions?</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In part 3, I will Insya-Allah share with you a few awesome thinking tools that you can use to spice up your thinking individually and in groups. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
But, before that, why not use your thinking skills to decipher and make sense of my drawing below? It basically reveals the idea process from conceptualization to solution(s). What more can you decipher from this drawing?</div>

<h2 style="text-align: justify;">
<a name='more'></a><b>10 SURVIVAL SKILLS</b></h2>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If you ask me, I would recommend that all University students should learn and <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">master these 10 core skills before graduating</span></b>.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
These 10 core skills are super relevant and needed to succeed in this era of uncertainty, disruption, automation, innovation and artificial intelligence (AI).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As graduates will increasingly be exploring jobs and working beyond their studies, these 10 core skills become even more important than the chosen courses and programs taken.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
However, what do these 10 core survival skills mean to me, will be discussed in part 2.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Finally, what about you? What skills do you think students should possess before being allowed to graduate?</div>

Let’s explore this together...</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I gave a 30-minute talk on the 1 March (2017) about how to gamify any course. More importantly, at last I got to meet the one and only<a href="http://badrulkhan.com/" target="_blank"> <b>Professor Badrul Khan</b></a>. Professor Khan has the <a href="http://elearnmag.acm.org/featured.cfm?aid=2590180" target="_blank">credit of first coining the phrase Web based instruction</a> and popularizing the concept through his 1997 best-selling Web-Based Instruction book which paved the way for the new field of e-learning. Known as the <a href="http://www.act.nato.int/founder-of-modern-e-learning-opens-2014-nato-e-learning-forum/" target="_blank">founder of modern e-learning</a>, Professor Khan has been honored with many awards and worldwide acclamation throughout his career. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
It was so inspiring to listen to his talk about meaningful e-learning and his new book: <a href="http://www.igi-global.com/book/revolutionizing-modern-education-through-meaningful/146987" target="_blank">Revolutionizing Modern Education through Meaningful E-Learning Implementation</a>. In addition, we had several learning conversations during the conference, and Al-Hamdulilla I picked up some learning wisdom.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It was an inspiring <a href="https://www.facebook.com/ichase2017/" target="_blank">conference</a> with several prominent speakers, including Professor Dato' Dr. Ibrahim Ahmad Bajunid, Professor Dr. Badrul Khan, Professor Dr. Abd Karim Alias, Professor Dr. Danielle Gallegos, Assoc. Professor Dr. Nor Aziah Alias, Professor Dr. Glen M Davis, Assoc. Professor Dr Norzana Abd Ghafar And Professor Dr. Winnie Chee. The theme was "<b><span style="color: #cc0000;">Unraveling Innovative Teaching and Learning in Basic Health Sciences</span></b>".<br />
<br />
<br /></div>
<h2 style="text-align: justify;">
MY TALK</h2>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
My talk explored gamification, and how we can design gamified learning experiences for any course using various methods and online tools. During the process, we discovered how the brain learns, learning design, gamification, and explored various interactive online tools to engage and gamify learning. </div>

<b>DESCRIPTION</b></h2>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This <a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/1520558899?ref_=pe_870760_150889320" target="_blank">book</a> by Zaid Ali Alsagoff, explores 43 of his most inspiring and impactful learning adventures over one decade (2007 - 2016). These 43 learning adventures were originally captured in his blog (ZaidLearn) during this period, which explored various inspirational educators, technologies, methods and ideas to innovate and transform learning. You will also discover why he pursued a personalized learning journey rather than a PhD route, and some mind boggling lessons learned on the way. Finally, it explores whether any of his learning adventures made an impact and a significant original contribution to the world of learning.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;">CHALLENGE</span></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Wouldn't it be cool, if we could in a formal lecture and classroom learning environment EASILY generate the kind of noise, engagement, and fun one experiences in a(n) electrifying concert, All-Star Wrestling event, football match, festival, etc.? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Alright, we have tools such as <a href="https://getkahoot.com/" target="_blank">Kahoot</a>, <a href="https://quizizz.com/" target="_blank">Quizizz</a> and <a href="https://www.polleverywhere.com/" target="_blank">Poll Everywhere</a> to engage every student/participant on their mobile devices with questions (and results) in a lecture or F2F learning session. These tools are great, but they require everyone to have Internet access, need to learn how-to-use the tools first (quite easy), and prepare questions before the session.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Now, what about when you want to ask questions on-the-fly as you speak, how do you engage everyone to participate in the room? You could quickly type and launch a question through <a href="https://www.polleverywhere.com/" target="_blank">Poll Everywhere</a>, but not many lecturers are confident to that (from my experience).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Another way, is to give all your students in the room color-coded cards to answer questions, which is a technique I learned from <a href="http://www.iime.org/committee/harden.htm" target="_blank">Dr. Ronald M. Harden</a>, when he facilitated workshops at the International Medical University (IMU). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEY3yNm0YNKolFZts_W4H-VNSNYYjEC0UI49FXq9xNxhOpM6_f5DKIQdbMJJCprc5SL9LGLyUJKYaUmqVdX56M2TtKaHw1_sm739Ztc8cG0PI8DvRtD38eSKT8Lhmbxf1E8WQlF_P6-lg/s1600/color-coded.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEY3yNm0YNKolFZts_W4H-VNSNYYjEC0UI49FXq9xNxhOpM6_f5DKIQdbMJJCprc5SL9LGLyUJKYaUmqVdX56M2TtKaHw1_sm739Ztc8cG0PI8DvRtD38eSKT8Lhmbxf1E8WQlF_P6-lg/s1600/color-coded.PNG" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Probably, the simplest way is to simply ask people to raise their hand if they agree (true, false, myth, etc.) with you. Though, these days' younger students (and us, too) often hardly bother to raise the hands (especially in big crowds), when asked during lectures or talks. Perhaps, we are so busy on our mobile devices typing away that we have no time to lift even one hand to participate in answering questions. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
So, any better alternatives?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<h2 style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;">YEAH-BOO!</span></b></h2>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
While driving on my way to the SMiLe Symposium 2016 at National University of Malaysia (<a href="http://www.ukm.my/" target="_blank">UKM</a>) on the 5th December, the 'YEAH-BOO' idea just popped up in my head. I was invited to participate in a panel discussion, and that also gave me the opportunity to explore my 'YEAH-BOO' idea, too. Unfortunately, I forgot to video recorded how it went (will video record next time, Insya-Allah), but here is a snippet on how this method works. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
You are giving talk, and suddenly you are inspired to ask the participants a quick Yes/True and No/False question, what do you do? Well, again I could ask them to raise their hands if Yes...BORING!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgabsAH1eRGjMvfoCa0UjMVbKmdQu-mzXOorr5TyIjX9wkWuMGai43ddNbA9yCUjSVtiFaLzFUVetaUgJ9MfyM_uc2R_wJorvzKEHefIH3Nxmp6nj6jL2AsaFqS5NGwLJ1O2SGHZHAFrg4/s1600/Snapchat.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgabsAH1eRGjMvfoCa0UjMVbKmdQu-mzXOorr5TyIjX9wkWuMGai43ddNbA9yCUjSVtiFaLzFUVetaUgJ9MfyM_uc2R_wJorvzKEHefIH3Nxmp6nj6jL2AsaFqS5NGwLJ1O2SGHZHAFrg4/s1600/Snapchat.PNG" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
So, instead I asked the participants to scream '<b><span style="color: #38761d;">YEAH</span></b>' (and even raise their hands if wanted) if Yes, True, Positive, etc. and '<b><span style="color: orange;">BOO</span></b>' if No, False, Myth, Negative, etc. depending upon the question. Guess what? You could immediately feel the energy, engagement and noise in the room. The participants seemed to have fun with it, too. When is the last time they could 'BOO' with a smile at an academic event?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The great thing about the '<b><span style="color: #38761d;">YEAH</span></b>-<b><span style="color: orange;">BOO</span></b>' method is that any educator can apply it without any training needed (except guts). It is a great way to awaken (sleeping students) and engage everyone to make some noise for their feedback and opinions. For the first time, you might experience the kind of noise and engagement often experienced in live sport events. Try it out to find out!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<h2 style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;">LIMITATIONS</span></b></h2>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<ul>
<li>The YEAH-BOO method is limited to questions with only two options. Although, you could have 4 sounds for 4 options, but I am not sure if you could filter out the noise you want. </li>
<li>You have to sense their opinion from the noise generated, and that might not be so accurate (compared to digital tools like <a href="https://www.polleverywhere.com/" target="_blank">Poll Everywhere</a>), especially if your hearing ability is damaged. Also, one nutty dude BOOing his lungs out might neutralize 10-15 'YEAH' screams.</li>
<li>While the noise and fun might awaken all the students in the room, other neighboring classrooms could be affected dramatically, if the room is not sound-proof. </li>
</ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<h2>
<b>YEAH-BOOING FORWARD</b></h2>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
If only I could work with a few geniuses from <a href="http://engineering.mit.edu/" target="_blank">MIT School of Engineering</a> or Google, we could conceptualize, design, prototype, and launch the sound-frequency-vibration-detector <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">YEAH-BOO WAND</span></b>, which will capture all the noise generated from the students/participants and provide <b><span style="color: #38761d;">ACCURATE LIVE STATS</span></b> on the projector/smart screen, which include percentages, noise factor sentiment (new and hot feature for learning), and voice-person detection for formal (and informal) assessment.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Once the YEAH-BOO WAND (version 1) is launched on February 22 (2018), we will straight away work on version 2, which will enable the tool to detect up to 6 different sounds, empowering multiple-choice questions, too. Launch target is November 14, 2018.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
For version 3, we will work on the YEAH-BOO WAND that supports open-ended questions, whereby even hundreds of students could talk at the same time and all that would be captured with a blink of an eye and be displayed on the project/smart screen in various ways, including chat boxes, word clouds, running text, etc. Yes, let's not forget that all the versions, will have infused gamification and game mechanics to spice up learning to a level never seen at a University, College or School.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<b><br />KEYNOTE</b></h2>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In this Keynote presentation (23/09) at the 21st CLD (Century Learning Design) <a href="http://www.smartedu.my/" target="_blank">MARA Smart Education Summit 2016</a>, we will explore how we can design gamified flipped learning experiences using various methods and online tools. During the process, we will discover how the brain learns, learning design, flipped classroom, gamification, and explore various interactive online tools to engage and gamify learning. It will be fun, engaging, and participants will get a taste of how they can use technology to flip, gamify and transform the way they facilitate learning.</div>

<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<h2 style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">IMAGINE</span></h2>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Imagine you are required to <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">give a one-hour keynote talk </span></b>to around 500 people at an International e-Learning Conference in Geneva, Switzerland. This is the biggest moment of your career. You are super nervous at the beginning of your talk, but you manage to capture the audience’s attention initially with a funny and relevant joke. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
However, 15 minutes into your talk, you notice that a few people in the audience are actually sleeping, others are playing with their phones (probably Pokemon!), some are chatting, and even worse some are even leaving the hall. What went wrong? </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<h2 style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">ENGAGE & GAMIFY</span></h2>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Let’s face it, today with so many social media and online distractions on our mobile devices, our increasingly shorter attention span, and urge for instant gratification, we need to <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">rethink how we give talks</span></b> (and facilitate training). </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5OZ2b6i8i-p6WsQgxxzvBDHNMPnmTlepL5sxGbkomIJc1i2wGTLz9UeeR1eLjPwGS2tlCXdeh9RGcjNAPhz69MTurUgQXtU4SOl8vg-yqfkFVwd5UEyvyMJvRaW9FePRueGHLky_m8GQ/s1600/Graphic+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em; text-align: center; white-space: pre;"><img border="0" height="187" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5OZ2b6i8i-p6WsQgxxzvBDHNMPnmTlepL5sxGbkomIJc1i2wGTLz9UeeR1eLjPwGS2tlCXdeh9RGcjNAPhz69MTurUgQXtU4SOl8vg-yqfkFVwd5UEyvyMJvRaW9FePRueGHLky_m8GQ/s320/Graphic+2.jpg" width="320" /></a>Let’s now explore <b><span style="color: #38761d;">five awesome online tools</span></b>, which we can use to engage both large and small audiences through their mobile phones, tablets or notebooks: </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
1.<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span><a href="https://todaysmeet.com/" style="white-space: pre;" target="_blank">TodaysMeet</a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
2.<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span><a href="https://www.polleverywhere.com/" target="_blank">Poll Everywhere</a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
3.<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span><a href="https://padlet.com/" target="_blank">Padlet</a> </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
4.<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span><a href="http://goformative.com/" target="_blank">Formative</a> </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
5.<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span><a href="https://getkahoot.com/" target="_blank">Kahoot</a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Interestingly, two of these online engagement tools are still totally <b><span style="color: #38761d;">FREE</span></b> (Todaysmeet and Kahoot), while three have a free and commercial version (Padlet, Formative and Poll Everywhere). If you use these tools appropriately, you will have the opportunity to engage, have more fun, and transform your talks and training to another level without requiring much effort, except for a bit of practice, imagination and courage. Are you ready? </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<h2 style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Wi-Fi</span></h2>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As all these five tools require you and the audience to have Internet access, it is crucial that the hall or training room has good Wi-Fi. Ideally, the Wi-Fi hotspot should be able to support the number of people attending your talk or workshop. However, to be on the safe side you can always connect your notebook (or tablet) to your own smartphone hotspot. If the Wi-Fi connection in the hall or training room is poor, you can still have fun using these tools, because today most people have their own smartphones and Internet packages, and these tools will not consume a lot of bandwidth when used. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now, let’s explore the five recommended online engagement tools to get you started!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<h2 style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">TODAYSMEET</span></h2>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-kc2CSWLKmCqGfOIQdJm4dlZonDcRdC20B9xUGIW2IkhOz4Dz_TxIdXtZLl-rE4LFl47gS7Xly9BG7MIVx-LpqkRsXGU0mbJRh4Jl9JUxwmT07HnN8A64NwF68wbG3EYegQJxKuKdQy8/s1600/Graphic+3_TodaysMeet.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="179" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-kc2CSWLKmCqGfOIQdJm4dlZonDcRdC20B9xUGIW2IkhOz4Dz_TxIdXtZLl-rE4LFl47gS7Xly9BG7MIVx-LpqkRsXGU0mbJRh4Jl9JUxwmT07HnN8A64NwF68wbG3EYegQJxKuKdQy8/s320/Graphic+3_TodaysMeet.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://todaysmeet.com/" target="_blank">TodaysMeet</a> is a great online <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">backchannel</span></b> tool to encourage discussions and Q&A sessions during lectures, talks, panel discussions, meetings, and so on. You can access TodaysMeet chatrooms with any kind of mobile device (browser-based), and it gives everyone a chance to participate at any time, and even the quietest ones will often be encouraged to express themselves.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It basically looks like a chatroom (view screenshot), and interestingly requires no account or password to create or join a chat session. Though, if you use Todaysmeet regularly, I would recommend creating an account (Free), so that you can get a few more useful features, and it will be easier to manage your past chat sessions, too.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Overall, It’s extremely easy to set-up a Todaysmeet session, and participants just need the link (URL), which you could share with them before you start your event. If you are using it for example during a conference talk, I would recommend that you run it using another projector and computer. As such, the speaker and participants can view the stream of questions, comments and thoughts live as they come through. Although, it could be distracting a bit, it usually encourages more participation by the audience, and the speaker can pick up without hassle some of the questions and reflections as he or she is presenting. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<h2 style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIUJaysaUNoGlM3J_Y3R51PnMXJLwRUvQrcnuKwEyOEFEXCaIykZ8EO0GmnZ0kMQ8VgAdj4joCTBBepuuEx9IeY5k33ztA-9oI5jMkyzZ5s1TWFedxGYwYUlrobMRYM2oFw3GIZaJW7pQ/s1600/Graphic_4a_Poll+Everywhere_Bar+Chart.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; font-size: medium; font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em; text-align: center;"><br /></a><span style="font-size: large;"><br />POLL EVERYWHERE</span></h2>

It empowers you to ask both multiple-choice or text-answer questions. As participants answer through their mobile devices, live streaming of results can be viewed (projector/screen) within seconds. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

Also, it has some awesome features to summarize visually text-answer questions, such as the <b><span style="color: #38761d;">Word Cloud</span></b> (screenshot). </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
However, the free version is <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">limited to 25 respondents</span></b> per poll. Though, if you are planning to use it often for large events or talks, you should consider investing in the commercial version. </div>

<a href="https://padlet.com/" target="_blank">Padlet</a> (wall) is a great online tool for <b><span style="color: #38761d;">ice-breaking</span></b>, getting to know one another, brainstorming, collaborating and sharing ideas. Once the participants have the link to the Padlet wall, they simply need to double click anywhere on the digital wall (using any device) to add a post. You can add images, files, videos, embed social media items (through embed scripts) and links. Everyone's activity can be seen on the wall instantly. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Personally, I always use it for getting to know the participants in a workshop or class better. For example, I would e-Mail the Padlet Wall link to all participants a week earlier, and request them nicely to say ‘Hi’ (with a picture of themselves), what they want to learn and share something interesting about themselves. So, even before the workshop starts, participants can get to know a bit about the other participants attending. Even better, I get to know more about them and what they expect to learn from the workshop.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Finally, you can spice up the backgrounds with all sorts of cool designs and images, and once the activity is done you can easily <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">export your Padlet wall</span></b> to PDF, Excel, or CSV formats with a single click.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
If you want to run a quiz, or some form of assessment during a live session to a group of people through their mobile devices, <a href="http://goformative.com/" target="_blank">Formative</a> is simply amazing. You can test them with multiple choice questions, fill-in-the-blanks, short answers, and even ask them to <b><span style="color: #38761d;">draw or submit images</span></b>. The results are displayed as they answer. Even better, you can even give customized online feedback to every single respondent (commercial version). </div>

WOW! <a href="https://getkahoot.com/" target="_blank">Kahoot</a> is limited to only multiple choice questions, but it is the most powerful and <b><span style="color: #38761d;">fun tool to light up</span></b>, excite and engage an audience to participate.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Usually, you prepare your Kahoot quiz game (e.g. 4-7 questions) before the training or talk. When the time is right during the live event, you launch your Kahoot. For participants to join, they simply need to go to the Kahoot join link (<a href="https://kahoot.it/">https://kahoot.it/</a>), key in the 4-7 digit code (auto-generated), and then add their name to join. Once everyone has joined the Kahoot session, the facilitator starts the Kahoot game. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Kahoot adds to the excitement by using <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">game mechanics</span></b>, which include music, a countdown timer for each question, time-based point-system (more points for early answers), ranking, and so on. Participants usually love the fun, competition and drama that Kahoot empowers. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">SO WHAT?</span></h2>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We have just explored five awesome online engagement tools, which you can use to engage and spice up your talks, meetings and training. My final recommendation is to encourage you to explore one tool at the time, and see how it goes. Just, make sure that you and the participants have good Internet access, and also have a<b><span style="color: #cc0000;"> backup plan</span></b> with non-tech activities (flying paper planes, juggling 3 balls, etc.) should things go wrong. </div>

<br />
Dear All,</div>
<div style="color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.701961); font-family: "Source Sans Pro", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 32px; text-align: justify;">
Just want to inform that I will be leaving IMU, and from July 2016, I will become a self-employed<strong> Learning Innovation Specialist</strong>, Insya-Allah. As such, I would like to share some of my plans, and Insya-Allah for those of you who might be interested to collaborate, then let's explore possibilities.</div>
<div style="color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.701961); font-family: "Source Sans Pro", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 32px; text-align: justify;">
For starters, I am sharing here <strong>four ready made training programs</strong> that you or your institution might be interested in (pricing can be negotiated). In addition, other programs can be custom made, but that would require a bit more planning and time.</div>
<iframe data-mce-src="//www.slideshare.net/slideshow/embed_code/key/FZBDGI48omgGZV" frameborder="0" height="485" scrolling="no" src="https://www.slideshare.net/slideshow/embed_code/key/FZBDGI48omgGZV" style="color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.701961); display: block; font-family: "Source Sans Pro", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" width="595"></iframe><br />
<div style="color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.701961); font-family: "Source Sans Pro", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 32px;">
<br />
More Talks and workshops from me (since 2007):<br />
<a data-mce-href="http://www.slideshare.net/zaid/presentations" href="http://www.slideshare.net/zaid/presentations" style="color: #8c68cb; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">http://www.slideshare.net/zaid/presentations</a></div>
<div style="color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.701961); font-family: "Source Sans Pro", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 32px; text-align: justify;">
However, what I am more excited about is the possibility to <strong>work with both academic and corporate organizations to transform them into creative learning organizations</strong>. So, if you need an adviser, partner or innovation workshop facilitator in such projects, I am all ears. I cannot promise success, but I can promise you Insya-Allah that you will find a passionate and experienced learning innovation specialist ready to spark change and learning innovation in your institution or company.</div>
<div style="color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.701961); font-family: "Source Sans Pro", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 32px;">
Thanks again and looking forward to Insya-Allah collaborate with you in the near future.</div>
<div style="color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.701961); font-family: "Source Sans Pro", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 32px;">
Warm regards & Salams,</div>

<h2>
<b>THE SPARK?</b><b><br /></b></h2>
<div>
Last year, I was excited to share the <a href="http://zaidlearn.blogspot.my/2015/04/my-rm-69-rapid-e-learning-studio.html" target="_blank">RM 69 Rapid e-Learning Recording Studio</a>.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<img height="332" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifG6W6CzjS0MHaYcvx2d-DF_DMwS7km-MClhw3pgL9-ac36jExhAhhC77KeZb8mIZoWKMCZRQKZSLIqvQSsLBQf9kxuTKXDxd4R1dAaICeO31BfhPORHobl7qkw82xJ7OhCvIc77M7Kc0/s640/screenshot.189.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But since then, I have realized that the idea of needing to purchase something not easily available (e.g. Loon holder above), to empower something else just complicate things. Also, the <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">biggest challenge</span></b> of the loon holder is that once you click the recording icon on your mobile recording device, it will cause a shake (minor or big depending on how gently you do it), which is pretty annoying. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
However, over the last few months, I have <b><span style="color: #38761d;">rediscovered my joy for drawing</span>,</b> and experimenting on how we can use it to become more powerful learners, and to inspire others to learn and think through our drawings.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtykkFRf-vSr5twjAsMqUC4ZEMutuLFpDmQAMZYBx7sqj3AbyEybCe75VQvbEuNybFT4q3FyXRz6FnxvEL6BonXtBO7ueF6AU9JCYLxPIsKC9P9-AKviOuOZGTZLtVSaIn8DPXx2W5k2o/s1600/Marc+Prensky.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtykkFRf-vSr5twjAsMqUC4ZEMutuLFpDmQAMZYBx7sqj3AbyEybCe75VQvbEuNybFT4q3FyXRz6FnxvEL6BonXtBO7ueF6AU9JCYLxPIsKC9P9-AKviOuOZGTZLtVSaIn8DPXx2W5k2o/s320/Marc+Prensky.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
While <b><span style="color: #38761d;">exploring how to draw watching YouTube</span></b> videos, I was surprised to see sometimes small kids sharing the process of drawing something with really good quality video recordings. WOW! How are they doing that? Are they using expensive tripods, headset (or bluetooth) with microphone, special lighting equipment, etc. Well some are, I suppose, but many are not. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
While searching for the answer (on YouTube of course), I was really amazed how<b><span style="color: #38761d;"> creative kids</span></b> were, when they cannot afford a tripod or other recording studio equipment. They would use whatever they had within their reach to build their own recording studios, including books, boxes, rulers, pencils, and paper holders. </div>
<br />
<br />
<h2 style="text-align: left;">
<b>THES 2016</b></h2>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
On Friday 27, I attended an inspiring workshop facilitated by <a href="http://marcprensky.com/" target="_blank">Marc Prensky</a> at <a href="https://thes2016.taylors.edu.my/" target="_blank">Taylor's Holistic Education Symposium 2016</a> (THES 2016).</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
During the workshop, he shared a new viral trend (according to him), which are <b><span style="color: #38761d;">30-second (learning) video sharing selfies</span></b>. Here he explains how you can easily do that (recorded during THES 2016): </div>
<br /></div>
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/TnuD6VgmadQ" width="560"></iframe><br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
WOW! So easy and potentially impactful. I tried recording me drawing Mr. Bean's face with my iPhone. Well, it was not perfect, but I could do it on-the-fly without needing special equipment beyond my iPhone.<br />
<br />
<br />
<h2>
<b>SATURDAY MORNING</b> </h2>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
On Saturday early morning (28 June), I went inspired into our (now) kids learning room and set up my <b><span style="color: #38761d;">"Zero Dollar Learning Studio" in less than a minute</span></b>, just using things that were already there. As they say, the rest is history. </div>
<br />
The key lesson here, is to <span style="color: #38761d;"><b style="color: #38761d;">simplify the process on how we share </b>what we learn</span> or have learned.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So, next time you want to share something to your class or the world, don't let any (so called must have) equipment or tool stop you unnecessarily. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
All the best with your next 30 second (learning) video sharing selfie using your self-designed "Zero Dollar Learning Recording Studio". </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZ76W7VGx5qsVcfurPraZByQIdv5lwRsT9R2d26hSLh7j_dGreQxO5_ZyqRwDHoWDqFiZDApiR7JdqcgrsqmeryaZflzc_jW9Oz2gdgSlGgMShbd9qZykR05fIYqlx3FHDIFtdCS2d9dE/s1600/screenshot.190.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZ76W7VGx5qsVcfurPraZByQIdv5lwRsT9R2d26hSLh7j_dGreQxO5_ZyqRwDHoWDqFiZDApiR7JdqcgrsqmeryaZflzc_jW9Oz2gdgSlGgMShbd9qZykR05fIYqlx3FHDIFtdCS2d9dE/s1600/screenshot.190.jpg" /></a></div>

<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<h2 style="text-align: left;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;">NOT EASY!</span></b></h2>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If you try to remember medical terms (often in Greek or classical Latin) using just rote learning or basic repetition methods it is <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">NOT EASY</span></b>.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
However, if you apply the tips shared next, Insya-Allah you will find medical terms (or any other terms for that sake) much easier to remember (with understanding), and at the same time nurture your imagination and creative mind (<b><span style="color: #38761d;">WHOLE BRAIN THINKING</span></b>).</div>
<br />
<h2 style="text-align: left;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;">TIPS</span></b></h2>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So, to remember medical terms (with understanding) more efficiently and effectively here are some tips to help you:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>1) Transform the term into exaggerated and vivid</b> <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">MENTAL IMAGE(S)</span></b> <b>using multiple senses.</b></div>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li style="text-align: justify;"><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxifB4_GILI" target="_blank">Video Tutorial</a> (How to easily remember the meaning of "-ptosis")</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><a href="http://www.memory-improvement-tips.com/remembering-medical-terms.html" target="_blank">Click Here</a> to read cool article on how to visualize terms using your imagination and creativity.</li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
To be able to spell a difficult term correctly, try saying them out-loud often (Visit a <a href="http://dictionary.reference.com/medical" target="_blank">medical dictionary</a> to get the correct pronunciation), and use your imagination to visualize the letters in a word into different colours and sizes, especially if there are any unusual or silent letters in the word.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyr560uGRt9xB_xlPIWgcnmO6gBkkdIRL-fbc-wOtKw0AswGKGhGOupa1r-shKNUWD0AJvfsLR22ai-RBALfiZIuRaxZjU8fQOiyeUN34_VrrRhcX_f31_CtnMJYyzwHoZCq-8S6is05k/s1600/screenshot.188.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyr560uGRt9xB_xlPIWgcnmO6gBkkdIRL-fbc-wOtKw0AswGKGhGOupa1r-shKNUWD0AJvfsLR22ai-RBALfiZIuRaxZjU8fQOiyeUN34_VrrRhcX_f31_CtnMJYyzwHoZCq-8S6is05k/s1600/screenshot.188.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>2) Describe what it means in your <span style="color: #cc0000;">OWN WORDS</span></b> <b>(Understanding). </b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
By teaching yourself (<a href="http://www.scotthyoung.com/learnonsteroids/grab/TranscriptFeynman.pdf" target="_blank">Feynman technique</a>) and/or others what you have just learned using your own words is a powerful way to foster deeper understanding, and even discover new insights into what you are learning.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>3) Give <span style="color: #cc0000;">EXAMPLES</span> of how it works, or is applied in context to the topic studied. </b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
By doing so, you will also more likely remember the term, and even if you are not able to initially recall the term at a crucial point, the example(s) you have remembered might trigger back the memory of it. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>4) <span style="color: #cc0000;">SHOW</span> how it is done, if that is required (e.g. procedure and skill).</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This requires practice (deliberate practice with reflection and reiteration), and keep on doing it until you have mastered it (without hesitation).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<h2 style="text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;">MNEMONICS</span></b></h2>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6-sG3ncw4hriKIJpykFQav9Z-cYcSlWtCwvOAxXtE87RW7fULQ2_PTGFyyK4Z8YAAVW0zV7qmnCXzVas59SY8kr10VhqI7xHkxXni2aNGfPrRGThll_HBfUbpc83b1vXdvXZM23nE3AM/s1600/screenshot.189.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="278" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6-sG3ncw4hriKIJpykFQav9Z-cYcSlWtCwvOAxXtE87RW7fULQ2_PTGFyyK4Z8YAAVW0zV7qmnCXzVas59SY8kr10VhqI7xHkxXni2aNGfPrRGThll_HBfUbpc83b1vXdvXZM23nE3AM/s400/screenshot.189.jpg" width="400" /></a>If you have to remember a <b><span style="color: #38761d;">CLUSTER OR SEQUENCE</span></b> of medical terms (e.g. medical procedure), mind maps, acronyms and acrostics can be really helpful.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Here are few juicy resources to discover more about medical mnemonics (any medical acronym or acrostic that you can imagine):</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<ul>
<li><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_medical_mnemonics" target="_blank">List of Medical Mnemonics</a></li>
<li><a href="http://www.rxpgonline.com/mnemonics.html" target="_blank">Mnemonics Database</a></li>
<li><a href="http://www.medicalmnemonics.com/pdf/2002_09_full_abr_a4.pdf" target="_blank">139 Page PDF Document</a> (Medical Mnemonics)</li>
<li><a href="http://english.360elib.com/datu/R/EM381009.pdf" target="_blank">Mnemonics and Study Tips for Medical Students</a> (183 pages)</li>
</ul>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Another and perhaps faster way, is to simply <b><span style="color: #0b5394;">G</span><span style="color: #cc0000;">O</span><span style="color: #e69138;">O</span><span style="color: #0b5394;">G</span><span style="color: #38761d;">L</span><span style="color: #cc0000;">E</span></b> "Mnemonics" with whatever medical term (cluster or sequence) you want to remember, and someone out there has probably already posted it freely on the web.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<h2 style="text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;">SUPER TIPS</span></b></h2>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If an acronym is not memorable, convert it to an acrostic. If the words in an acrostic is not memorable, change them into words that you find memorable.<br />
<br />
Another smart approach, is to familiarize yourself and remember the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_medical_roots,_suffixes_and_prefixes" target="_blank"><b>roots, suffixes, and prefixes </b>used in medical terminology</a> (derived mostly from ancient Greek or classical Latin). By understanding these building blocks, you will find it easier to understand and remember various medical terms by simply looking at the roots, suffixes and prefixes. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When you need to remember anything related to <b style="color: #cc0000;">ANATOMY </b>(Touch-based anatomy) try to make it a habit to point out (and touch it, if possible) the item learned (e.g. Fibula) on your body (or head), and also point it out on another person. Why? Because, every time you look at it (on your body or head) after that, your mind is probably going to trigger a recall (spaced repetition) memory. With a bit of practice, you will be wearing the anatomy dictionary for your exam(s). And of course, this will be very useful once you work, too.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiahRWHrZVnKsJCznNMAZ_jLygXM0xjHCez7uZXhbNIsaAnmJJ8Y7s-CrleGhuvSZoiArR_kbYDhyphenhyphent3Etg_QrXiIsgh0tigWeFUARRMYZJW9pWhg5TesOHYjFmNhUEUNegwGUtSx-vFTPs/s1600/screenshot.191.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="261" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiahRWHrZVnKsJCznNMAZ_jLygXM0xjHCez7uZXhbNIsaAnmJJ8Y7s-CrleGhuvSZoiArR_kbYDhyphenhyphent3Etg_QrXiIsgh0tigWeFUARRMYZJW9pWhg5TesOHYjFmNhUEUNegwGUtSx-vFTPs/s400/screenshot.191.jpg" width="400" /></a>Finally, to make any term learned stick in your <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">LONG-TERM MEMORY</span></b>, try using <a href="https://voxy.com/blog/index.php/2011/05/are-flashcards-an-effective-learning-tool-infographic/" target="_blank">flashcard</a> tools like <a href="http://ankisrs.net/" target="_blank"><b>Anki</b></a>, which help you to memorize anything using spaced repetition (repeated intervals) until you really get it, which is embedded into the program.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
All the best and <b><span style="color: #38761d;">HAVE FUN</span></b> memorizing medical terms and acquiring a deeper understanding of them using the tips just shared.</div>

<h2>
<b><span style="font-size: large;">GOAL</span></b></h2>
First, I would like to thank <a href="http://rozhanmidrusprof.com/" target="_blank"><b>Prof. Rozhan M. Idrus</b></a> (Director, Global Open Access Learning, USIM) and the <a href="http://goalcentre.usim.edu.my/" target="_blank">GOAL Centre</a> team for inviting me to attend <a href="http://www.usim.edu.my/" target="_blank">Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia</a> (USIM) MOOC, <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">FLOOC</span></b> (Foreign Language Open Online Course) and <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">BLOOC</span></b> (Blended Learning Open Online Course) celebration and launch on October 22, 2015.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
To add some external flavor to the event, I was also invited to showcase my <a href="http://www.slideshare.net/zaid/noocify-the-mooc-52772591" target="_blank"><b>NOOC</b> (Nano Open Online Course) concept</a> and demo my cost effective and innovative <a href="http://zaidlearn.blogspot.my/2015/04/my-rm-69-rapid-e-learning-studio.html" target="_blank">Rapid e-Learning Studio</a>. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Here, I am trying my level best to explain to <a href="http://www.usim.edu.my/en/vice-chancellor" target="_blank">Profesor Dato’ Dr. Musa Ahmad</a> (<b><span style="color: #cc0000;">Vice Chancellor</span></b> of USIM) what the NOOC idea is all about. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTSUemy85_42cHpe3Q6CUkcMk0DqxQVh3c60uv_wijLp7napV6qci3GdvNHl_Cng5-FH0bb8zDUWZ8umLMVyErvrIQ3PZH65_RjI-VlC2RI4GGP7-9ujQ2o2qPJWF2-2RV-gEyak0II2w/s1600/screenshot.175.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="344" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTSUemy85_42cHpe3Q6CUkcMk0DqxQVh3c60uv_wijLp7napV6qci3GdvNHl_Cng5-FH0bb8zDUWZ8umLMVyErvrIQ3PZH65_RjI-VlC2RI4GGP7-9ujQ2o2qPJWF2-2RV-gEyak0II2w/s640/screenshot.175.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<span style="text-align: justify;">Also, I did manage to convince him that he can learn how to juggle 3 balls, too (age is not a barrier). Based on the feedback from Prof. Rozhan M. Idrus, it seems like the Vice Chancellor liked what he saw, and we will be collaborating on a few NOOCs in the very near future. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">RAPID E-LEARNING STUDIO</span></h2>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Just before the official event started, <a href="http://drkhamimi.weebly.com/" target="_blank">Dr. Nurkhamimi Zainuddin</a> (FLOOC Inventor) recorded an impromptu video with his handphone of me explaining briefly about the cheap Rapid e-Learning Studio, which empowers any smart device to become a recorder. The audio quality is not good, and I was kind of shuffling here and there, but Insya-Allah you will pick up some insights on how it works... </div>

<b><span style="font-size: large;">SECRET RECIPE</span></b></h2>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmgodFFjxPY" target="_blank"><b>Secret Recipe for Remembering Numbers</b></a>" was recorded at my IMU office desk using the Rapid (and mobile) e-Learning Studio during the early morning (22 October, 2015). I started recording 6:55 am and was finished by 7:14 am (<b><span style="color: #cc0000;">19 minutes</span></b>). A few adjustments and retakes were needed, but I only did one full recording, and here is the output (Not perfect, but not bad either):</div>

I don't think ever in the MOOCified world history, there have been <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">three types of __OOCs</span></b> launched in one event. It will be interesting to see how <a href="http://goalcentre.usim.edu.my/info-management/staff-directory/content-development-unit-cdu?view=employee&id=4" target="_blank">Dr. Najwa Hayaati Mohd Alwi</a>'s BLOOC and Dr. Nurkhamimi Zainuddin's FLOOC ideas evolve. </div>

<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: justify;">While watching the movie '</span><a href="http://www.paperplanesmovie.com.au/" style="text-align: justify;" target="_blank">Paper Planes</a>'<span style="text-align: justify;"> (in Norway), I was struck by the idea of using Paper Planes as an Ice breaker and/or team building activity. Cheap, easy, fast and fun! Though, after </span><a href="https://www.wrike.com/blog/ultimate-guide-team-building-activities/" style="text-align: justify;" target="_blank">Googling the idea</a><span style="text-align: justify;">, I quickly realized that it has already been discovered for just that. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So, what I am going to share does not warrant a PhD (or an award), but it does have it's own recipe tailored to my taste.</div>
<br />
<br />
<h2 style="text-align: left;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;">REQUIREMENTS</span></b></h2>
This is what you should have to make your Paper Plane ice breaker/team building activity a success:<br />
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>A long hallway or open space (Ideally 20 meters or longer)</li>
<li>Red tape (to mark the launch line) </li>
<li>Measuring tape/stick (if possible)</li>
<li>A4 paper (80 - 120 mm, <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">preferably different</span></b> <b><span style="color: orange;">c</span><span style="color: lime;">o</span><span style="color: cyan;">l</span><span style="color: blue;">o</span><span style="color: purple;">r</span><span style="color: magenta;">s</span></b>)</li>
<li>Stop watch (use smart phone or tablet)</li>
<li>Awards (e.g. chocolate bar for the winner)</li>
</ul>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Below are a few examples on how we can use paper planes as an ice breaker or team building activity to connect and engage participants involved. </div>
<br />
<h2 style="text-align: left;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;">DESIGN</span></b></h2>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
From one sheet of paper, participants are asked to design for example the <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">coolest paper plane</span></b>. If they want to decorate or color the paper plane that can be encouraged, but remember to set the rules before the game, otherwise some competitive participants could complicate things for the worse.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
To make it more objective, you might want to add an evaluation rubric to guide participants for what the judging criteria is. Here you could encourage self or peer assessment. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Another approach is to empower everyone to vote for the best paper plane. Here, we could use polling tools like <a href="https://www.polleverywhere.com/" target="_blank">Poll Everywhere</a> (free version limited to 40 respondents), or <a href="https://www.google.com/forms/" target="_blank">Google Forms</a> (unlimited respondents for free) if you have a larger group. </div>
<br />

<br />
<br />
<h2 style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">DISTANCE</span></h2>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Instead of design, you could challenge the participants to throw their newly designed paper planes as far possible from a fixed spot (using red tape). Ideally, you need a<span style="text-align: left;"> long hallway, or an open space in or within close proximity of the workshop/training/class area. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: left;">To differentiate between the paper planes, you could use A4 sheets of various colors.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
How to make the <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">world record paper plane</span></b> for flying furthest?<br />

<br />
<a href="http://jrn338.wikispaces.com/Paper+plane+layout" target="_blank">Click here</a> for more tips on designing and throwing a paper plane.<br />
<br />
<br />
<h2 style="text-align: left;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;">TIME</span></b></h2>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Instead of throwing furthest, you could challenge participants to make paper planes that fly for the longest time. For this, you would need a stop watch to measure the time for each paper plane participating. Also, here you could use Google Spreadsheet to keep all the times online, organized and fresh.</div>
<br />
How to design a paper plane to beat the world record for <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">flying a long time</span></b>?<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/bxqySyO49q4" width="560"></iframe><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<h2 style="text-align: left;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;">PLAY</span></b></h2>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Have each participant write their name on a piece of paper, along with two interesting facts about themselves. Then have all participants fold their papers into a paper plane. Everyone should toss the paper plane into the air, then pick up one that lands nearby. The person picking up the paper plane must open it, read the information, and find the person it belongs to. This exercise has an element of play that will relax participants, and they will get to know someone else at the event by reading the information on the paper (<a href="http://smallbusiness.chron.com/five-minute-ice-breakers-meetings-26305.html" target="_blank">Source</a>).</div>
<br />
<br />
<h2 style="text-align: left;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;">TARGET</span></b></h2>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Finally, to spice the activity further, ask participants to throw the paper plane towards a target. This could be everything from a cone, landing strip, bulls-eye to yourself. Having yourself as the target, could make the paper plane activity really fun, as participants will have a good laugh trying to hit you with their paper planes. Just keep some distance (7+ meters) to ensure you can react to avoid any injury.</div>
<br />
All the best and <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">don't be too serious</span></b> about winning! Break the ice and have fun!<br />
<br />
<br />
<h2 style="text-align: left;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;">ACTION</span></b></h2>
My first experiment with the Paper Plane Ice Breaker took place on the 27 August (2015) at UKM during our '<a href="http://zaidlearn.blogspot.com/2015/08/designing-21st-century-flipped-learning.html" target="_blank"><b>Designing 21st Century Flipped Learning Experiences</b></a>' workshop. It was engaging and fun! Here are pictures from the workshop, including the Paper Plan Ice Breaker :)<br />

<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The winner of the first Paper Plane Ice Breaker is <a href="https://twitter.com/AzamriMansor" target="_blank">Dr. Zam</a>! Congrats! Here is the winning moment captured:</div>

<br />
<br />
So, why is it the <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">ultimate icebreaker?</span></b><br />
<br />
Not only can it be made relevant and contextualised to practically any subject (e.g. maths, engineering, sport psychology and history), all generations from Baby Boomers (remember old times!) to Generation Alpha (WOW! Something cool beyond a smart device) can do it, and have fun doing it while breaking the ice of any mood :)<br />

<b><span style="font-size: large;">WORKSHOP</span></b></h2>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In this interactive talk, we will explore how to <b><span style="color: #6aa84f;">design relevant and engaging flipped learning experiences </span></b>using various methods and online tools. We will actively look at how we can transform face-to-face (F2F) learning using the ‘Flipped Classroom’ and ‘Gamification’ methods. Then we will explore how we can use interactive web tools to engage students and develop interactive presentations. Participants will be engaged throughout this interactive talk with learning activities. It will be fun, engaging, and participants will get a taste of how they can use technology to transform the way they facilitate learning.</div>

<b>LEARNING OUTCOMES</b></h2>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div>
After this interactive talk, you will be able to:</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Discuss how the brain learns.</li>
<li>Apply Gagne’s 9 events of instruction to design more engaging learning experiences.</li>
<li>Apply Flipped Classroom and Gamification methods to your teaching and learning.</li>
<li>Use interactive web tools to engage and assess learners during face-to-face learning sessions.</li>
</ul>
